Never played the game, so this soul cannon must be one of the gameplay mechanic and also maybe the story/dialog branch, I guess.

I wonder if the choice to sacrifice Boron (a different character is sacrificed in the game that I won't name to avoid spoilers) was based on a survey that was done a few years ago where the majority of players preferred to put Socks and Boron in the soul cannon (unfortunately I can't find the link to that survey)
