i mean, from Britain perspective at the time, their official policy was "power balance" in Europe since Napoleonic wars. Russia gaining access to warm port could theoretically would tip that balance. Isabella Bird travel also happen right after russia won war against ottoman and gain control of the black sea. so even more power up to russia would really undesirable.

i know from modern view it easy to judge retroactively, but it was policy that make sense for them at the time.

You know something I really love about this? I have a pain/back condition- not quite the same as our Ms., but similar. Doing stuff takes it out of me- anything i do i can expect to be in pain while I do it. I kind of love how the dramatic swerves hing on accessibility. Can she find a path she can bear, can she find lodgings that will let her manage. Can she keep hold of an ally who makes it possible for her- physically- to manage? All this time I've been reading and really enjoying that, along with the historical aspects.

...I can't lie, I'm not sure I could manage it as well as she does.
