The silliest thing about this is that it's extremely easy to get a decent sound out of a recorder. Unlike a flute, where you really have to learn to blow correctly (your umbrechure or however it's spelled), or a clarinet, oboe, or sax where you have to learn making a sound with the reed, you just put your lips to it and blow gently. You don't have to know how to whistle at all, the only hard thing is learning the fingerings and memorizing/reading the notes.
I played recorder in grade school, it was super easy. Then when I got to middle school they told me it wasn't allowed in the band because it didn't require any skill, so I had to switch to sax!
