Oh, I feel this warm feeling of getting into a new series, my brain now switches between "Gachiakuta" and "Everything else". My take-aways:
1. Thought (after the 1st chap), that tribesmen are only the ones in the slums, which could possibly mean that they were colonized by the "royalty". This chapter seems to go against this - it's all about tribesmen, in fact, but pure-blooded and mixed. Either all people of mixed blood get thrown into the slums or just most of them, due to poverty, status, caste, whatever really gets their society going.
2. A lot of stereotypes among Sky People. And I don't mean "oh, they're written so forcefully" - NO. I mean literal stereotypes they devised (akin to real world ones, of course, just changed a bit). Like - they always expect the worst, like crimes and murders out of mixed bloods. They also treat children of murderers/thieves as - respectfully - murderes and thieves. And that is - as far as I know - something prevalent in japanese culture as well. Hidden commentary from Kei Urana incoming? Maybe...
3. I like how hell-bent on getting back Rudo is. And not just back on the actual murderer, but also on regular people. He's scrappy, has some street-smarts, some tenacity. Doesn't seem like somebody who wouldn't kill another person, if he has to, neither. And with Legto gone, he needs guidance and somebody close to him, badly. Like, to be a part of something and be treated with kindness. I don't know how old he is, but I can see him being unbelievably loyal and caring, if a bit of care and sympathy is given to him in the Abyss. In short - protecc the boi and he shall protecc also.
4. Is the entire ground there struck by some radiation? Or maybe we're getting into mystical powers territory? Engine's umbrella can easily go both ways, depending how fantasy-ish Urana-sensei wants to take this manga. I mentioned radiation due to those scrap-monsters, but yeah - if they're literal trash, it's probably about powers or technology, not radiation.
5. I don't blame Rudo, even though he was being dumb. His life shattered, he ended up in the middle of toxic wasteland, surrounded by monsters, barely surviving, coughing up blood and getting dizzy - who wouldn't be confused and full of questions? I tell you - he's gonna be smarter about this from now on, just let him rest and get his bearings.
6. BACKGROUNDS! OMG, I love the designs, all the little particles, signs, graffitis etc. Last time I was this enamoured by background details was while watching Megalo Boxing 1 and 2. Before that? "Dorohedoro" probably. It's enticing as fck!
