I was thrown off too, but then I re-read the first page and realized I might just be insufficiently Japanese. The first two panels are her uniform and her book bag, that would probably be enough of an introduction for the Japanese audience.

As long as you can talk to women like a normal person you should be fine. I had a GF in high school, but it wasn't until 12 years later that I started dating my wife. I was lucky that we worked in the same building. Just by talking with her normally and it took a while before we became friends. Then more time till she was ready to date. She had to know she could trust me. 28 years later and two grown kids. I am short and I think not very attractive. My wife is above my pay grade as they say. So it can happen. Don't despair.
