Seems like hes truly getting attached to her now, but as he was sniffing the clothes she was in he realized that he likes her more then he thinks so he stopped immediately.
So he probably had an incident in the past where he loved some girl but she probably did something that really hurt him and traumatized him so now hes afraid of getting super serious to avoid being hurt again
