Without his reason to fight blah blah blah, he can protect her more effectively by completing the mission instead of just focusing on the symptoms of her danger. There's a system to collapse. Once you do so it becomes infinitely easier to protect her. Also he's being targeted, so the more she's with him the more danger she's in. But also who else will protect her? Hard decisions...
