They hurt each other because they are lonely, and because they are lonely, He stopped hurting his rival. Toxic masculinity, I guess.
Toxic masculinity? He fought because he didn't know what else to do, and he hated his rival because he couldn't defeat him when he tried, and got humiliated. Deep inside, he feared the fight, because he knew that he couldn't lose again, that's why he didn't care if it was a fight to the death. In the end, he decides to stop fighting because it's pointless. He discovered by talking to his opponent that they weren't that different, as he also feared their encounter. While he could have continued the fight; just like his rival once couldn't break his limbs, he couldn't bring himself to end it, because he no longer saw meaning in their fight, he had overpowered him, and didn't need to hurt him anymore, there was enough bloodshed in his path, and at that moment, it all seemed meaningless to him.

That makes a lot of sense. It would be nice if you could redact it to be more readable, but thanks anyways. I thought about toxic masculinity because it looked like using fights to solve issues was a very masculine way of doing things.

I didn't put much thought into it, I'll admit.
