Always let your subordinates know why you want something done.
This should be done if your subordinates have shown any tendency to act upon their own initiative.
Especially if the reason you want something done is foreign to anything that you or they have done before.
Just to make sure they don't bollux up your long term plans.
Note: A General who doesn't show initiative is worse than useless.
You really do need to make sure your military leadership understands what you really want to achieve prior to commencing hostilities.
Also, if you do start acting out of character...
Be prepared for those loyal to the firm, but not necessarily to you, to take action to have you replaced.
Do consider whether it's possible to convince them that this new course is a good thing before they set the wheels in motion to dispose of you.
So, yes, it's his own damn fault.
