If you negatively done any harm on children, physically or mentally. You don't deserve human rights and should be treated lower than the slave in the 18th Century( spanking to make children learn about their bad action is kinda in between, so idk)
It always depends on a case by case basis. Some kids are absolute gremlins that may need harsher punishment. But less harsher avenues should absolutely be explored to correct behavior for more gently.
If you're too soft or too harsh immediately then it can set upon a path to fail.
