I think I get Blanc's character now: he's frivolous about everything except football itself, and I think it has to do with the fact he's a foreigner working for the national team.
For example, what if he had to prepare a match against the French national team? It wouldn't feel like a competition if we assume both coaches (Japan's and France's) were produced by France. It's probably just me who can't make sense of national teams though.
