I'm reminded with the dragon head, MC tried acting "too cool for school" and let a man's wife die in front of him.

Simply because he wanted to "look tough" and a warped sense of moral superiority (i.e. "oh noes I need to respect his choice").

Nobody thinks like this. Only author's or editor's dumb idea of "I think this sounds cool (no it's not)" came through.
