this is, in my opinion, the basic underlying theme of every Furuya Minoru work - "Is it really alright to remain like this? It's comfortable, but I can feel in the pit of my soul that This Is Not Enough." The conscious self-actualization of a boy becoming a man, or a man becoming a human being.

Strikes me more as a malaise that only dies when it simply runs out of energy to struggle than any kind of fundamental transformation. It's definitely about waking up to that emptiness of the soul to start, but it doesn't seem to fill for his characters. It's something that'll periodically resurface for the rest of your life, I think.
