I've been asking for a while, why these nice girls keep falling for this author's weird dudes, but in this chapter he laid it all out: "people desire things they don't have".

idk how true that is in real life, but I think I understand his angle, now. It applies to some of the other themes, too - the characters are so self-destructive because the moment they find peace/happiness, they immediately want something else.
