They also have star anise in them - nah lol. Star anise though... I must have had a dish with it at some point, but I'm coming up blank. Wait, maybe the Chinese 5 spice... yeah, there we go. Seems to be in garam masala mix too. Eh, I guess it's just not as pronounced as grinding up the actual dried fruit.
As trivia, the Japanese star anise is actually toxic and virtually indistinguishable from its Chinese counterpart, once dried and processed. Seems contamination does happen on occasion.
