... I enjoyed it.
I guess it does sort of leave it ambiguous whether George or Mantaro won. George is the one trucking and Mantaro is the one eating, so maybe that hints at the outcome, but I don't know. In my mind, I think they'll be facing off again, one day. After all, third time's the charm.
I think the central problem with the whole Eat Olympics arc was that it didn't start off very strong. Nothing really grabbed my attention. It was a fine idea, but sometimes these "international" arcs just don't work out in execution. It's possible the author and his editors were running on empty as well, since the previous arc was good enough to serve as the manga's ending. They put their all into that.
As an aside, I do respect the author's drawing style for making proportions somewhat realistic for the competitive eaters. George's statuesque six pack aside, lol. Even the attractive women are shown to be "big" relatively speaking.
Welp. It was a comforting read for me. It hearkens to a world where... eating competitions, something that's really not "serious"... can be taken seriously because things are going well in other areas. I'd ditch this world for that one in a heartbeat.
Tsuchiyama Shigeru passed away in 2018, and he left a large body of work. I'd say this is his magnum opus, but here's hoping more of his manga get picked up for translation. Until then...
