Ngl I felt the same way, so I did a re-read from the start. And now im starting to understand everything. Problem was it doesn't explain stuff in a proper order or at the best time. Tho if you still can't understand, then tbh drop it coz I think having break between chapters can also affect understanding of the story.

Both of them are Okuri Ookami (escorting wolf), but one of them is an imitator, a stolen mystery tale. This is explained in a later chapter
