The friend friend is an abuse victim who's a prisoner in her own home. The warden being her own mother

Author-san didn't even give the survivor group's arc anytime to breath, a lot of interesting plot points could have been done with that arc.

Still confused how the whole shelter died, we just moved on like it meant nothing (maybe thats the point as we are mainly in the MCs perspective), but it seems they will have to likely free her or she frees herself (referring to the new character), and either option is leading to a murder attempt.
