a lot of cheating stories come with a prepackaged excuse, like the partner was abusive or they were already cheating on the protagonist, but personally i think it's much more nuanced to show this sort of situation where you can imagine the betrayal Kaori is feeling. Obviously if there had been more communication between the two (we see how their correspondence is very sparse, multiple times in the story) there would have been less sadness and maybe they could have saved their relationship before he had grown detached past the point of fixing. But then we wouldn't have a story, so

I read the raws years ago after scanlations stopped and initially felt the same. Years later though I realise that the reader’s lack of attachment to her is probably meant to reflect that Ozu doesn’t really have any attachment to her either and is just him going through the motions.

Yeah, I think the author did intentionally keep away for most of the story to lessen the blowback of Ozu cheating and have Hara have more favorable view than "unknown" girlfriend.

Yeah, as ugly as this breakup and cheating is, I appreciate that the author didn't do something as lame as making excuses for it.

Tbf this is true for more people than they realise. They don’t get together with someone because that’s truly the person they want to be with, but instead because of societal expectations and also a desire to not be alone.

I feel like she could but unfortunately we don't know enough of her cause the author kept her away until the end. I still like Hara more in the end despite her flaws but I still think it would be interested if Kaori was more in the story. Would have made things more dynamic lol
