Author is probably trying to highlight that one of the biggest concerns of same-sex couples in China face is the inability to be there for each other at hospitals, since they don't share visitation rights.

The reason you should think that "it's a good thing that dad got hospitalized" is not because it's gonna get him away from work or whatever but because it's nice when bad thing happen to bad people, hopefully he is in a lot of pain.
It's really concerning that we seem to be heading for the inevitable "you should forgive your abuser because your abuser is your parent" type bullshit, he is gonna say "sorry", as if that means anything, she is going to hug him and all is going to be "resolved". Hopeful I'm gonna be pleasantly surprised and maybe she will finally cut all contact with this pair of dipshits, until the dad dies and she can have a joyous celebration because her abuser is finally dead but I'm not holding my breath.
