I'm too ace for this manga. Like does the author want us to believe that these are all romantic relationships? Or are some of them simply female friendships and/or role models of a different flavor?

Or is that the point I'm missing, that romance is growing out of a "onee-san" / older sister relationship? All of that is problematic for the teacher story and the large-age-gap stories and I'm really not sure what to think.

I think you also have to take into account the time period of Hana monogatari, which was written in the early 1900s. I think this anthology in general is meant to depict unrequited love that never really gets to start as a result of the times.
