There's a lot of things regarding doing business overseas, especially the US, that realistically I'm not very convinced. But both arguments coming from gramps and dad are valid. It's their personal approaches. It how they show that they care about their craft and business. I'd pick dad's side though. I hope his business in the States has been doing well.
