I think the father expected the son to take over the farm, the son wanted to become a comedian instead. The son's career ends and he comes back to work on the farm, but the father is still angry at him for leaving (or at least feels like he has to act angry). It's a common story for rural communities when moving to the city becomes an option- the young people leave for opportunities and the countryside is left with an aging population.
