Whats the difference between school and academy that her mother was talking??

'school' is 学校, gakkou, plain old school. 'Academy' is 学園, gakuen. There are two possible meanings (that I know of) there: first is that it's a multiple school campus which has kindergarten, middle school, high school. Second is that it's a private school that's fancy enough to call itself an 'academy' because a 'school' is for poor people. Which would mean our girls come from relatively well off families. So far there are no hints of which of these it means, other than 'academy' is a little fancier either way.
