I don't know the specifics, but she does attend work related meetings and Mariko also needs to be paid so I would assume that she sells enough for her publisher to be more than happy to pay two people a living wage + maybe royalties of some sort.

Sometimes it's a bless being into stuff that is somehow popular among many people, but sometimes it's a curse. Yeah, it's pretty useful to have topic that is somehow understandable by many, but man, those wannabe experts are often pain in the rear. That's why it's good to have many hobbies and at least one, that's quite technical/not very popular/hard to understand.
