Things like this are pretty common in Japanese wrestling, usually called a trial series or something like that and typically being 5-7 matches. They'll put a young wrestler against a series of established veterans. The point isn't for the younger wrestler to win since everyone knows they're going to be losing these matches, though maybe they'll be given a flukey win somewhere. It's mostly a way to elevate them by showing the crowd that this is someone the company has plans for if they're able to measure up by seeing just how well they can hang in bigger matches against the top talent. Especially nowadays, they'll bring in an outside wrestler or two especially if it's one who's a legend or a highly esteemed veteran.

Yup most recent one I can think of is when they put Wakana Uehara up against freakin' Aja Kong.
