I think the dish Haruko made is probably supposed to be [Braised Pork (Belly)], not [Pork Stew]. I don't know what the original text is, but a quick mind-meld with Google suggests it could be 角煮 and the pictures match. Braising and stewing are somewhat similar cooking methods and I'm guessing the Japanese can't really be directly translated, as is often the case with food/cooking in any language.
Unless she actually called the dish [Pork Stew]. I probably still would have localized it to [Braised Pork] myself since I figure most Westerners would expect a stew to be served in bowl with vegetables and more liquid, though I know there are many different attitudes when it comes to "How far can I localize this?"
