Yeah, that's typical for Japan, though. You're often expected to stay late every day at work and go out with your coworkers to drink after work on a regular basis. That's one of the reason they have a word in their language for "death by overwork."

The "I don't care who he screws around with as long as he comes home to me" is a Japanese thing, too - although that's one I wouldn't mind seeing more of in the US.
