That's quite a lame start full of plot holes. Considering his lvl up skill activate after killing monsters, wouldn't that basically mean he didn't contribute anything to killing monster in the first place during his stays in the party? And why did they form party with him in the first place?

the first chapter clearly implies that they where a party before they all got skills and that he played the role of the tank in the party
