Well, the MC would be quite out of character if he went full throttle on anything besides his otakuness, right?

But yeah, author is stalling the MC for maximum dramatic cringiness. Old master has to die, new master must fight an unequal fight against evil dude + brainwashed minions just for MC to come give a helpful nudge later. C'mon people, don't you know the rules of filler ?
