Aren't prions just misfolded proteins? I don't think mammals really evolved them, on the contrary, some sites have shown that the New Guinea tribe are evolving prion resisting mutations. The prions were just passed to other people when they consumed the deceased's brain, and prions are sneaky and slow-acting taking roughly a year to kill and diagnoses coming from a brain dissection. And they kill victims by misfolding other proteins

This is pretty interesting development as I'm pretty sure cannibalism (eating your own species) is something frowned upon in the entire animal kingdom, not just a human custom, due to the increased danger to the species continued livelihood (if you eat your young because they're easier prey you're actively harming your chances of passing down your genes) and the increased risk of transmitted diseases (as you're fully biologically compatible).

I interpreted the salt taste as in she was crying that he wouldn't eat her if she had died.

Friendly remainder that eating people is bad and may turn your brain into mush.
The prion disease will only occur if you eat an infected's brain. If you eat someone not infected, it technically should be good.

But this shows the practical reason why humans don't eat their dead. Human adapted diseases naturally reside in human bodies, so eating someone infected is quite guaranteed to infect you as well.

If our bodies are tougher, like the monster specie, we could adapt to this and prevent infection. But human bodies are rather frail in some ways, even compared to normal animals.
