It's an interesting matchup, in terms of the prize. One has apparently massive raw literary talent resulting in a masterpiece, the other has a crowd pleaser and, through no fault of her own, a good deal of industry pull and buzz. Which of those two does the mangaka think is more important in Japanese publishing circles? Or will the day of reckoning be postponed by short-listing both of 'em?

If this were real life and the music industry, the gyaru chick would win the competition, since she's more marketable. She's like a pop star, Taylor Hilton or whatever. Makes tons of money with catchy yet shallow lyrics and colorful props at concerts. Oh, and her dad was also a country music singer.

Hibiki, on the other hand, would have her cathartic techno playing at anti-government protest raves in Tbilisi, with punters getting high and setting fire to stuff. The soundtrack of a revolution.

Obviously it's a market, an easy to sell author is miles better than an introvert PR nightmare with no background and only 1 book to her name.
It's not even a question.

Popularity is one thing, being pure literature is a separate category all together. Both of them know that.
