I believed earlier in the manga that them getting together could fix things, but now all I feel is creeping dread with each chapter.

considering she hasn't seen Tomikawa's background the way we have, Hiiragi's handling this relatively nicely. It ain't gonna be easy but I believe in the two of them...!

Don't want to speculate too much based on what I know of future chapters but I do think it's a bit of an emotional spectrum that bites both of them in the ass in a way. Tomikawa's experiences have left her somewhat emotionally stunted, which is why she sometimes can come off as childish or naive and is emotionally dependent on others and the approval of others. Hiiragi, meanwhile, was forced to emotionally mature at a young age due to her abuse. "An old soul" as some folks would say. But that kind of emotional maturity at a young age can come with a sense of hyper-awareness and hyper-consciousness that can lead one to over-analyzing simple conversations. We've already seen how this plays up Hiiragi's anxiety and how she gets in her own head, even when she first met Tomikawa and started doom-spiraling about how she'd make fun of her in class. But it works in her favor in situations such as these, or when meeting Igarashi for the first time.

I think in the best of times, Tomikawa's childish nature can stop Hiiragi from doomspiraling and Hiiragi's maturity can help her pick up on when Tomikawa is uncomfortable, or in trouble. But should they ever both doomspiral at the same time, I fear for what may happen...

I love how they handle hiirage, tomikawa have trust-issue from being ignored and abandoned "mentally"

And we see Hiiragi keep trying to reach tomikawa despite everything
