@icekatze They had casualties within the illusion, which doesn't translate to dying in real life. It could also be referring to causalties among the troops in the illusion. Actual deaths among the students does not make sense within the context of the story, considering the line "But for the students to retreat safely without casualties" implies that she is referring to the illusionary battle itself, not the physical bodies of the students. Also, I think I found the point of misunderstanding: I am talking about within the context of a world that has magic. Illusion would almost always refer to something created by magic, not real world applications. Anyway, I reread my first reply and it came across way more agressive than intended.

@EclipseKing Yeah and? Obviously Nakoruru meant here is casualty inside the test which doesn't necessarily means there are actual students died.
Remember 1st and foremost its a test, and all they are fighting is illusion with magic inside a dungeon. So died fighting in test = failed exam =/= actually dying irl.
If every year there was actual student died that wouldn't make sense.

@Disguised22
It seems that I can't figure out anything that conclusively points to one interpretation or the other, so I guess all I can do at this point is hope that it won't come up again as important in the future. 🤔

(Also, in the previous chapter, someone calls out that the frontline soldiers are being defeated, so it seems that they probably weren't referring to casualties among the troops in the illusion.)

I would feel betrayed in that situation, risk of death for a measly "passing grade"? that's ridiculous.

If its just an illusory world without true risk, then its fine ofc.

That... is the dumbest idea for a test. Dying if you fail is already stupid enough, but the fact that someone could end up getting killed for someone else's mistake is even worse. The fact that they just take it at face value is... uhg, dumb.
Bro, they can use REAL MAGIC.

The tests for owning firearms, even in the UK and Commonwealth (much less the USA), are far less strenuous, yes; but, for real magic?

They can fireball your mother's entire neighborhood, selectively kill people, cause a landslide...

This seems like a pretty fair test.

Does basic training in the military where you live involve killing lots of trainees? Seems pretty unusual to me.

Of course it doesn't; we do not use Magic, as far as I'm aware.

I said that it scales up, and that if you were to scale up from "what we know," then this level of training doesn't seem strange or unusual.

If you especially consider the stakes involved, it is tantamount to having the ability to create WMD on a whim; a very strenuous test to ensure that it will be used at least semi-responsibly is almost certainly going to involve the possible demise of the applicant. These are "Phenomenal Cosmic Powers" but without the "itty bitty living space," after all!

I would seriously urge you to travel and broaden your horizons if you have not been able... particularly if this seems super unusual; people dying is not something to be taken lightly, but neither is the ability to eradicate an entire city with a snap of one's fingers.

The power gained dictates the price paid; and shouldn't we all be so lucky to live in a world where those with great power learn firsthand that it comes with a great responsibility?
