In the time skip Rei becomes a doctor, and is actually the (off screen) doctor from the artist's previous work. So this series is now actually the prequel to that one.

EDIT: "actual" to "actually" -- c'mon me, you know better than that...

But that one has been "completed" as well as far as anyone can tell, even if 57 didn't get marked as END. After that, author switched over to doing this one instead.

Though maybe now they'll take it up again, or remake it from here.
