Old-school sliding into their DMs.
That branch manager is a short sighted idiot, pushing for the biggest sale means she won't be coming back. By suggesting a more affordable option she will come back many times because she was happy with her purchase. Customer loyalty is important in the world of jewelry because the clientele is so small to begin with. You might not see that customer again for 2 years but when they want a new piece they'll think of how accommodating you were and come back
Yup.
The #1 car salesman in the US said his secret wasn't to sell someone a car, it was to sell them their next car. If you sell someone something to just get a commission, that's all you get that one sale. It you level with them, explain their options that work best - even if that option is the competitor across the street - get them the best deal you can, you are now the person they come to for the rest of their lives, and where they send their friends.
I knew a guy who was a car salesman was 60+, made tons of money, and he said he didn't even have to sell cars anymore. He had a shelf of notebooks of former customers - their names, numbers, notes about what they were looking for - and they called
him when it was time to buy a new car.
He was a Ford guy starting out, but moved to a Chevy dealer when the dealership owner tried to screw him on commission. He got a call from a customer who had made a big to-do about having always bought fords his whole life. So when the guy reached back out, the Salesman said "Hey, I'm at a Chevy dealer now, I can't sell you a Ford, let me give you a name you can talk to at the place I worked before" and the guy said "If you're selling Chevrolets, I'm Chevy guy now. Fuck Ford."
He also had a number of clients who would just call him up and say "I need a new car". Didn't ask any other questions, didn't care the make or model. He'd confirm their address and ask a couple questions, and that it. They just trusted the guy to get them the right vehicle at the best price, and would sign the paperwork when the new one was dropped off.
