The mom really sucks, but...there's also something sad about her. She looked strangely lifeless as she told that poor boy to quit handball because it was meaningless. Maybe she had dreams once too, and then had it sucked out of her until all she could do was do the same to her son. It wouldn't excuse her behavior, but it would explain why she's like that.

That woman is going to need a really unique redemption arc. I don't want to believe that a guy with a clear sense of decency like our man was raised by a transactional monster like that, so she must have some redeeming quality. I just can't see what, right now. She's forcing herself to be cold for his benefit or something? That's a stupid plan, if that's what it is.
