I think the story is aware of how bad the age difference is. I think the point is to show that these two don't really care anymore. Same way they don't leave change at the store anymore. But more so, it's a dive into their minds.

Also, major death flag for Hiromi at the end there.

hideo seriously cant be alone, he imprints on hiromi in the sea of trees not a day after losing tekko, and after she's incapacitated he develops a similarly dependent attachment to oda (who bears a physical resemblance to a younger tekko). it feels as though hes passing through an procession of girlfriend/mother substitutes.
