Every time I see a cultivation story 90+% of the characters seem to be cultivating self confidence rather than immortality.
And the remaining % are definitely not cultivating immortality... The way of cave sitting?
I know I would need some seriously crazy mantra to not be dissatisfied about sitting in a cave for a thousand years.

They aren't 100% awake when cultivating, it's essentially going to a light sleep where they can dream but still wake up at any time. Because their bodies dont age and they naturally stronger over time by letting their body's instincts draw qi, they can theoretically do this forever and get stronger doing so. Normal cultivators do this because they draw more qi this way. Odd foggies do this so they can comprehend the dao.

tl;dr they sleep until they figure out the meaning of life in their dreams.
