IIRC, it's heated floor, basically. The fireplace is outside the house, and the chimney runs under the floor to circulate the hot air and heat from below.

In other words, the hypocaust heating that the Romans had. That's exactly how it worked.

Funnily enough I also have this knowledge (From the Worlds Greatest Estate Developer) that I thought I would never hear or see about again but look what I'm reading now
