Wild tomatoes (Solanum pimpinellifolium) are not poisonous. The problem is that the new world Tomato and the old world Deadly Nightshade are related enough to look similar. Deadly Nightshade is, as the name implies, very poisonous. Their fruit look like dark purple tomatoes, hence the false belief that tomatoes were poisonous. The myth developed in parts of Europe where Nightshade is a common wild plant, whilst in parts where it isn't, people were eating them without trouble.
