Gender roles in Japan & other Asian countries are stricter than in the west so it makes sense to me though I wouldn't mind it. Society expects a man to be manly & men who are not as aggressive, loud or stoic depending on the situation are made fun of or not taken seriously. Men aren't supposed to show vulnerability. They are supposed to be dependable & eventually become head of the house so that's why he feels inadequate here. This is generally true for all Asian countries.
I'm not trying to preach but just trying to give a different perspective.
