I'm struggling to understand this first chapter. I'm sure she was dreaming, but then why the missing sheet of seaweed? And her meeting Shusaku... Is this some "shared dream experience"?

I suppose the point could be that it's to show how children perceive the world around them, but I don't like it when they introduce characters who meet each other again later.
