Cause France was THE European nation for a decent period.
We still say "language of France", while speaking English.

Germany eventually took that role, but they kinda got smashed quite badly for their misbehaviour.
French just still think they are as powerful and grandiose, when Versailles was new, which can grate people. They also never got smashed like Germans.
