Magic is always a mcguffin for anything the author wants, but it feels more like brainwashing then puppetering a corpse.
But hopefully removing the black thing on her face removes the brainwashing.

Fun fact : other than via brain damage it should be very hard to permanently delete the memories of a living person.
A memory is linked to every other memories relating to it and the missing memories can reconstruct from others it is linked too.
