mmmm, don't remember when exactly they went over this in detail but it comes down to one of the components all the native spells of that world have. It isn't the only reason they're inferior but a good chunk of the formulas used for their magic is devoted to channeling power through some form of deity or spirit. In this world, demon's and heroes have blessings from said deities to protect them. The reason why what he thought was "junk code" for their spells was used was to call on an opposing deity's power to pierce the divine protection of the opponent. Of course, these deities and their rivalry isn't part of his "modern magic" combat theory (or his world obviously) so it took till now for him to notice the part that's missing in all of his spells that is specifically necessary to fight demons here.
