Still seems like the reason that the others were acting strange was the passengers they picked up between worlds, it's just the MC that was aware enough to hear an actual voice. I'm thinking the so-called ritual just hides the corruption line on their status and supresses any outside effects; maybe even slowing it down, but the corruption itself continues. As for what the corruption actually does I'm leaning towards, with far less belief, that it is allowing the other entities into the summoned people. Whether or not if that is what the king is after is unknown.
