You know I discussed this a bit with a reader a while ago. He theorized that Stone People might have been gargoyles in the ancient past, and became more human over time. I thought his theory sounded similar to how some stories about the Annunaki, ancient giants/deities, say they became less giant and godlike the more they stayed on this planet and/or interacted with humans.
