The dad could've been better but calling him "shit" is telling me you're probably 10 years old. Without plot armour MC 100% would've already been dead. I'd say it's a pretty logical decision to stop your son from throwing his life away because he wanted to be like you (with 0 ability to back it up). He gave him a chance at the end because MC away from just chasing his father, so I'd say the Dad is fine.
