QUICK SPOILER-FREE REVIEW:

Expectations should have been set in the description of this manga.

But if you go in with near-zero expectations, the stories here turn out to be pretty good. It's all contemplative, poignant, and believable. There are no good endings here. If you come in expecting that, you will definitely be disappointed. Not that the endings are bad per se, just more realistic.

I've not read her feature length manga, but reading this anthology made me understand why Mengo is drawing for other writers; I don't think she's a very good writer. Her writing seems fucked up but in a pointless kind of way, like, she doesn't really have a voice like Shiruka Bakaudon for example does. Her writing, at least in this, is at this bad spot where it's too fucked up to tell a straightforward story that you can get invested in, and not fucked up enough where it's shocking, provocative and interesting. It just feels pointless, making you question "so what was even the point of that?"

Here's a short, spoiler free review of each entry:

1st one: It's shit. Enough said.
2nd one: It's shit. But has some memetic images.
3rd one: It's shit. Also a bit sad. Had a laugh out loud funny moment that I don't think was meant to be funny. Reminded me a little bit of Boy's Abyss, like a very lite version of that manga.
4th one: this one had the most going on for it; it ends in an ambivalent way that makes me think this could be turned into an actual manga - like, I'd check it out if she wrote a manga based on this premise. It's still bordering being on shit, but this one I'd say has the most to say.
5th one: A friend of mine, who has read her manga (Scum's Wish) and is also a fan of Oshi No Ko, believes Mengo's type is a girl with bangs (both the protagonist of Scum's Wish and Kana from Oshi No Ko have this hairstyle); couldn't help but notice A-chan here has the same hairstyle, and seeing that the story is about a mangaka reflecting on a friend she had that she envied and admired, it made me wonder whether this is supposed to be reflective of Mengo herself. It may sound like it's interesting when I put it like this, but it wasn't - it was actually very boring.
6th one: Was this incomplete or something? It felt like a shitpost she made for Twitter, not something she fully fleshed out.
7th one: Reminded me a bit of "Gachi Koi Nenchakujuu: Net Haishinsha no Kanojo ni naritakute", which is a manga that starts out like a dumpster fire but the characters turn surprisingly likable as it goes along. Well this one didn't really have that. Another story that felt very pointless.

Overall, I'd say the quality of writing here is bad. I guess I could go into detail with each one, but the stories are pointless, and reviewing them is as well. In fact, you reading this comment is also very pointless. We're wasting our lives away with these Japanese comic books, aren't we? Thanks for making me think about this, Mengo.

Reddit sent me here without prior knowledge... (Please send help hahaha)
Felt like compilations of raw ideas so they're short and not very bombastic in execution.

6th had like shitton of potential but it's just as misopogon above said. Honestly I'd like to read that. 5th is my fav, I suppose.

Don't be dissuaded by the negative comments; this is one of the best single-artist anthologies I've read recently. The only exception is chapter 6, a darkly comical isekai short that isn't at all bad, but passes too quickly to make much of an impression. At least it lightens the mood for a (bloodstained) moment.

The rest are clever yet morbid tales concerning relationships that go south in one way or another. The writing and translation are excellent throughout, which really counts here, as the ironic storytelling operates subtly relative to most mainstream manga. Close reading and a bit of reflection will be required in order to really vibe with this.

The clean, character-focused art is another plus. I really have no complaints, except that the gloomy atmosphere and apathetic characters risk becoming oppressive if the whole thing is read in one sitting. For me, the dark tone works and serves the stories well, but sun-loving types may disagree.

Criminally underrated. Deserves a 9/10, but I gave it 10 to spite the heathen :sneaky:
